EVs need less maintenance than petrol or diesel cars — but they still need it. Here's what to expect.
Electric vehicles are often marketed as 'low maintenance' — and compared to petrol or diesel cars, that's largely true. But they're not maintenance-free. Understanding what an EV needs — and what it doesn't — helps you budget correctly and keep your car in good condition.
What EVs Don't Need
- Engine oil changes
- Timing belt replacement
- Spark plug replacement
- Exhaust repairs
- Clutch replacement (automatic only)
- Fuel filter replacement
- Catalytic converter servicing
What EVs Still Need
- Tyre rotation and replacement — EVs are heavier than equivalent petrol cars, wearing tyres faster
- Brake fluid change every 2 years — even though regenerative braking reduces brake wear, the hydraulic system still ages
- Cabin air filter replacement — every 1–2 years
- 12V auxiliary battery replacement — usually every 4–6 years (separate from the main traction battery)
- Coolant system service — EVs use liquid cooling for the battery pack and power electronics
- Wiper blade replacement
- Annual safety and vehicle check
Brake Wear on EVs
One of the genuine advantages of EVs is reduced brake wear. Regenerative braking — which recovers energy while slowing the car — does the majority of the deceleration work. Friction brakes are used much less, and pads can last twice as long as on a petrol car. However, this low usage can lead to brake disc corrosion from inactivity — a paradox where the discs rust faster because the brakes are used less. Regular checks ensure discs haven't surface-corroded to the point of affecting performance.
PKA Automotive services EVs for all maintenance tasks not related to the traction battery or high-voltage systems. We carry out tyre fitting, wheel alignment, brake fluid changes, cabin filters, and full safety checks on all electric vehicles.
