How Often Should You Service Your Car?

Confused by service intervals? We explain the difference between interim, full, and major services and when each is due.

Regular servicing is the single most important thing you can do to keep your car reliable, safe, and hold its value. But service intervals can be confusing — manufacturers use different mileage figures, and the terminology of interim, full, and major services isn't always clear.

The Three Core Service Types

Most independent garages like PKA Automotive offer three levels of service, each designed to suit different driving patterns and mileage.

  • Interim service: every 6 months or 6,000 miles — ideal for high-mileage drivers who cover more than 12,000 miles per year
  • Full service: every 12 months or 12,000 miles — the standard annual service for most drivers
  • Major service: every 2 years or 24,000 miles — the most comprehensive service, including spark plugs, fuel filter, and brake fluid

What Does a Manufacturer Service Schedule Say?

Your vehicle's handbook will contain a service schedule specific to your make and model. Some modern cars have variable service intervals based on oil quality sensors, which can extend full service intervals up to 20,000 miles on certain premium vehicles. However, these extended intervals are generally only safe when using the specific oil grade the manufacturer requires — cutting corners on oil quality with a long-life interval can cause premature engine wear.

Don't Just Follow the Service Light

The service reminder light is a useful prompt but it doesn't replace a physical inspection. Many components — brakes, tyres, coolant, and brake fluid — deteriorate with time as well as mileage. A car used only for short local trips may only accumulate 5,000 miles a year, but still needs an annual service because the oil degrades through moisture contamination and the coolant loses its anti-corrosion properties.

How to Check When Your Car Is Due a Service

  • Check your vehicle handbook for the manufacturer service schedule
  • Look at your service history book or digital records for the last service date and mileage
  • Check whether a service reminder light is illuminated on your dashboard
  • If unsure, call us — we can advise based on your make, model, and mileage
