Whether it's a classic car over winter or a vehicle you're not using, correct storage prevents costly damage.
Leaving a vehicle unused for extended periods — weeks to months — can cause surprising amounts of damage if not done correctly. Batteries discharge, tyres develop flat spots, brakes seize, fuel degrades, and moisture causes corrosion. The good news is that these issues are largely preventable with the right preparation.
Preparing the Vehicle
- Carry out a service before storage — fresh oil prevents moisture and acid build-up in the engine
- Fill the fuel tank fully to prevent condensation forming inside the tank (petrol older than 3 months degrades — consider a fuel stabiliser additive)
- Clean the vehicle thoroughly inside and out to remove contaminants that cause corrosion during storage
- Apply a good quality wax to protect the paintwork
Battery Maintenance
A vehicle battery will self-discharge over weeks of inactivity, and a deeply discharged battery may be permanently damaged. Use a trickle charger / battery conditioner to maintain the battery at the correct charge level throughout storage. These are inexpensive and can be left connected safely for months.
Tyres and Brakes
Tyres left stationary develop flat spots over time. If possible, slightly over-inflate the tyres before storage to slow this process. Move the vehicle a short distance every few weeks if possible. Apply the handbrake lightly — or use chocks instead of the handbrake for very long storage, as brake pads can bond to discs if left applied for months.
The Right Storage Environment
A dry, covered, ventilated space is ideal. Avoid plastic or non-breathable covers, which trap moisture underneath. A breathable car cover allows air circulation while keeping dust off.
