Timing Belt Replacement: Everything You Need to Know

A snapped timing belt can write off an engine. Here's when to replace it and what's involved.

The timing belt (also called the cambelt) is one of the most critically important components in your engine. It synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft — ensuring the engine's valves open and close at precisely the right moment relative to the pistons.

What Happens if a Timing Belt Snaps?

In most modern engines, if the timing belt snaps, the pistons and valves will collide. The result is severe engine damage — bent valves, damaged pistons, and often a destroyed cylinder head. Repair costs frequently exceed the vehicle's value, meaning a snapped timing belt often writes off the car. Prevention is critical.

When Should the Timing Belt Be Replaced?

Replacement intervals vary by manufacturer — typically between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 5–7 years, whichever comes first. The time element matters because rubber degrades even without use. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendation for your specific vehicle. Check your service history — the timing belt change date should be recorded.

What Should Be Replaced at the Same Time?

Most mechanics recommend replacing the tensioner pulley, idler pulleys, and water pump at the same time as the timing belt. These components share the same labour cost to access and are subject to the same wear. Replacing them costs little extra at this point but could save a return visit if one fails prematurely.

How Do I Know If My Timing Belt Is Due?

  • Check your vehicle service history for a timing belt change record
  • Check your handbook for the manufacturer's replacement interval
  • If you're unsure, consult a garage — we can check your vehicle's records and advise
  • Don't assume a high mileage service includes timing belt replacement — it's a separate item unless specifically quoted

PKA Automotive carries out timing belt replacements for all makes and models. We use quality belts and kits, and always replace tensioners and recommend water pump replacement at the same time. Don't risk it — book a timing belt check today.
